About this work
Three joined panels form a horizontal triptych: on the left a baby's face rises from a dark olive-brown ground beneath swimming orange goldfish; the center panel, on deeper blue, shows an infant in a pink hooded raincoat surrounded by goldfish and a dark bird-like shape; on the right a baby looks up from near-black water.
Cool blues and blackish greens dominate throughout, broken by warm orange, yellow, and white strokes of the fish, applied in loose, visible brushwork. The floating faces and swimming fish create a dreamlike, submerged mood, playful yet slightly uncanny in its unexpected color contrasts and disjointed space.
